Welcome to Friendship

Friendship is a value based organization, established in Bangladesh by Yves Marre and Runa Khan Marre in 1998, to identify and reach the poorest of the poor and the most marginalized communities. With an aim to provide essential basic services in the most inaccessible and hard to reach areas Friendship works in the chars and riverbank areas of northern Bangladesh.

Through a highly innovative and effective service delivery mechanism Friendship has served more than a million poor, marginalized people living in the char areas. Presently, the organization is working across the borders of Bangladesh through formation of Friendship International which is working with the same sincerity and commitment in Pakistan for the well being of the poorest of the poor.

Cyclone 'Reshmi' swept over southern and southwestern coastal belts of the country early on 27th October with winds gusting up to 84 km an hour. The deep depression over the Bay of Bengal grew into Cyclone Reshmi. The cautionary signal for maritime ports was raised to four from three at daytime. Cyclone Reshmi developed from a well-marked depression on the west-central and adjoining northwest bay over three days. The cyclone ripped through different upazilas of Bhola, Barisal, Pirojpur and Patuakhali districts and adjoining coastal areas, including Char Fashion, Patharghata, Saronkhola, Mothbaria, Golachipa, Mehendiganj, Bakerganj, Hijla and Muladi, from nearly 3am to 5:30am.

Cyclone Reshmi lashed Friendship working areas- Majer Char in Pirojpur, Kalapara in Patuakhali, Taltoli in Borguna and Saronkhola in Bagerhat. In Majher Char no life loss during the cyclone but damaged Aman rice 10% to 15% and 50 to 60 trees are uprooted. Water has entered inside the embankment through the broken areas due to tidal surge. Some old houses have been damaged due to strong wind.

The storm also damaged standing crops on vast tracts of land in Taltoli of the Borguna district and uprooted many trees. The last cyclone Reshmi damaged hundreds of houses and fishing trawlers in shoronkhola of Bagerhat. Kalapara of Patuakhali was ruined badly by Reshmi rather than our other working areas. Three people were killed in Hazera of Kalapara. Around 1,000 thatched houses damaged by the cyclonic storm. Seedlings of winter vegetables were badly damaged in low-lying offshore islands.
