Successful completion of all emergency relief activities

Friendship is pleased to announce their successful completion of all the emergency relief work they started in order to aid the victims of the terrible flooding in 2007 along with the cyclone (SIDR) victims. The Emergency Relief, which consisted of food and medical assistance, started in 7 northern districts after the flooding. Food and essentials for 978, 750 individuals residing in Gaibandha, Kurigram, Pabna, Sirajgonj,Bagura, Jamalpur and Tangail districts were distributed in accordance with the relief program. Following the catastrophic cyclone dubbed SIDR, Friendship initiated an Emergency Relief distribution program which was directed to victims in five southern districts, namely, Bagerhat, Pirojpur, Barguna, Patuakhali and Barisal. 900,000 individuals residing in these areas received food and other essentials in accordance with this program. Friendship also took it upon them to operate 6 emergency medical camps instantly after the tragedy struck, and successfully treated 14, 872 patients.



BCA relief aid distribution ceremony deemed successful

Friendship successfully distributed aid of BCA (Bangladesh Caterers Association) Surrey UK, amongst the fishermen in the coastal area of Kalapara (Kuakata) who were affected by the cyclone SIDR during a distribution ceremony held on the 4th of September 2008. The Executive Director of Friendship, UNO, Chairmen, journalists and beneficiaries were all present in this noteworthy occasion. 180 families struck by the horrifying phenomena (SIDR) living in Kaurchar, West Kuakata, Khajura and Char Gomoti villages of the upazilla were pleased to receive 15 wooden boats, three fiber glass boats, three power tillers, three irrigation pumps, fishing nets and two deep tube wells to guarantee the supply of clean water. The villagers would also be able to receive proper healthcare through their access to 2 medical centers, which were set up for their benefit in the villages.



The baseline survey of RSEP has been completed

Friendship was implementing a project with Manusher Jonno Foundation to bring to them awareness of their basic rights and their rights to good governance is bringing to them an element of Justice. The baseline survey for the project has been completed. The service providers in the 10-targeted Chars with a developed format was conducted a baseline survey. There were three project goals. Firstly, to increase the access of poor people to existing govt. services through community based direct intervention, secondly, to strengthen the FCDC for effective coordination and collaboration with GOB and NGO’s and thirdly, to make the duty bearer (Private, GOB) more responsive to char dwellers. Now the result of the survey is used to moderate the strategies of the project and the evaluation of the project. Moreover this baseline survey report will assist in future project.



Health Services in Remote Char areas to be geared up

Secretary to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare AKM Zafar Ullah Khan has said health services and family planning activities in the remote and backward char areas of the country will be geared up for building a developed and prosperous nation. He also said “It is our foremost duty to reach the health services to the char people as they have equal rights to enjoy the existing facilities of the country”. He said this while addressing the inaugural ceremony of a camp on ‘Permanent and Temporary Methods of Family Planning, Eye and Health Services for Mothers and Children’ organized by Friendship at Batikamari Char under Kamarzani union of Sadar upazila on Friday 18th July 2008 as chief guest. He also urged the stakeholders including the government and NGOs to bring the Char people under various development programs to uplift their economic and special condition. He visited the family planning activities being conducted by Friendship at Sidhai Char under Mollar Char union and expressed his satisfaction over the performance of Friendship. Professor MA Fayez, Director General of Health Department and Kamrun Nesa Khanam, Director General of Family Planning Department were also present as a special guest on that inauguration ceremony.



Obituary of Dr. Henk Kinders

Our beloved Dr. Henk Kinders, founder and chairman of Bangladesh Health Society - The Netherlands (BHSn), a very intimate friend of Friendship family, passed away on July 06, 2008 (Europe time: 19:20). Friendship lost one of its valued partners. Our hearts are heavy with sorrow and tears, but our memories are full of the love and kindness that has given by him over the years. We mourn for the departed soul rest in peace!



Runa Khan receives IDB award 2008

Runa Khan, the Founder and Executive director of Friendship received Islamic Development Bank (IDB) award 2008 along with Saideh Ghods of Iran in recognition of their efforts to improve healthcare for women. Friendship, a non-profit volunteer organisation working to improve the health and socioeconomic condition of the poorest of the poor char people in Bangladesh. Friendship owns a floating hospital which provides mobile health units to the people of the Nomad Islands situated in north Bangladesh. The programme has served over 299708 beneficiaries up to May 2008. In 2006, Runa Khan also was involved in sending relief services to Pakistan earthquake victims.
